                                                                                   For Discussion 12/05/07

                                                                                   December 5, 2007

The Faculty Affairs Committee recommends Senate approval of the following resolution.

RESOLUTION ON BOX CHECKING FOR PROMOTION DOCUMENTS

Background.  The directions on President’s Form 36, which replaces the old form 36C, say the following in regards to item 6 (Basis of Nomination): “Reference is made to University Promotion Policy, Section I, Paragraph one.  In Item 6, an “X” is to be entered in the “P” column to indicate the primary area(s) of excellence that form the basis for the promotion.”  However, the “University Promotion Policy” to which these directions refer states explicitly in its heading that it is a WEST LAFAYETTE promotion policy.  Our own promotion policy, Senate document 06-05, states explicitly that “The contributions of a faculty member may well be integrated among teaching, scholarship, and service, since many professional activities contribute to more than one of these.  Promotion committees should therefore evaluate candidates for promotion based on professional impact, using separate contributions in the three areas of teaching, scholarship, and service as guidelines only.”

Resolution. It is inappropriate for promotion committees on our campus to judge candidates for promotion on the basis of which box, if any, may be checked in item 6 on President’s form 36; committees should instead consider candidates on the basis of the entire body of work presented in the application for promotion.
