Re:      Documents for Fostering Civility on Campus – Faculty and Student Guides

Task Force Members:

Tammy Guerrero, Jennifer Gregory, Judith Hack, Joseph Hermes, Akram Hossain, Sarah Howard, Deborah Johnson, Jim Johnson, John Lucas, Randy Moles, Cheryl Moredich, Ralph Ocon, Gloria Roldan-Scheib, Gail Wegner, Lynn Zimmerman.

Invited Guest Fall 2005 Robin Dunn, SGA President

The charge of the task force per Senate Document 05-01 in Fall 2004 was to develop guidelines for appropriate student behavior in the classroom and service offices throughout the University.  The task force worked from February through March, 2005 and developed various documents for the Faculty Senate to review in Spring 2005.  At the May 4, 2005 University Senate meeting, our proposal was tabled.

Recent Task Force Activity:

The task force reconvened during the fall 2005 semester and produced new documents.  Input from Student Government President Robin Dunn, an invited guest to the task force during the fall 2005 semester, helped frame the present guides now ready for presentation to the Senate.  SGA President Dunn solicited input from the SGA Senators, which we used to further modify the guides.  After Purdue legal review and more editing the task force met on January 11, 2006 and approved the proposed guides attached to this memo.

Recommendations:

The Task Force on Student Civility and the University Faculty Senate recognize that incivility is not limited to members of the student body.  We thus encourage the Chancellor to call all members of the university to commit to and to promote a civil community campus-wide, by charging all the governing bodies to address civility within their own groups.

We recommend the Chancellor call APSAC and CSSAC to develop procedures for handling student disruption in areas other than the classroom, as these new guides primarily address classroom issues.  The task force developed some draft documents last academic year that these governance groups can use as starting points.

Finally, the Task Force on Student Civility recommends adoption of the following documents for the campus and requests that you include them on the agenda for the February 1, 2006 University Faculty Senate meeting:

  1. Guidelines for Faculty in Handling Student Disruption in the Classroom
  2. Civility Guidelines for Students
