The Faculty Affairs Committee requests the approval of the Faculty Senate on the following changes to Section V of the “PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF THE OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD RECIPIENT” Document.

V.  Nomination Package

The nomination package shall consist of a brief of not more than two pages prepared by each nominee with appropriate appendices attached.

A.  Structure of the Two-Page Brief

1.   Name of the nominee, rank and departmental affiliation

2.   List of all courses taught during the academic year prior to nomination, as well as the fall semester of the current academic year, if applicable. With dates and numbers of students enrolled; e.g., MA 153 - SP 89, 150 enrolled.

3.   Statement of nominator indicating why the nominee warrants the award.

4.   Information relevant to the instructional effectiveness of the nominee.

5.   If a previous winner of the award (who has become re-eligible) is nominated, growth in effectiveness beyond that for which the award has already been given should be the focus of the nominee’s brief.

B.  Appendices

It is recommended that the following material from three years, including the fall semester, if applicable, of the current academic year, be appended to the brief:

1.   Results of all student evaluations of instructional effectiveness for all classes taught during this period. Evaluation materials from a maximum of three years may be submitted. Any material submitted in this category MUST include the written statement of the nominee that evaluations were conducted without his/her presence or influence.

2.   Not more than four documents of support from at least two of the following:

      a. outside evaluators

      b. students and/or alumni

      c. faculty
      d. administrators


PROPOSED DOCUMENT

V.  Nomination Package

The nominee is to provide to the Chair of the Outstanding Teacher Award Committee a package of materials by the date indicated by the Chair.  The materials recommended for submission include the following:

1.  List of courses taught at Purdue Calumet, with dates and enrollments

2.  Cafeteria evaluations of courses taught, and/or other quantitative means of assessing student (subjective) perceptions of learning

3.  Examples of objective assessments of student learning

4.  Statement of teaching philosophy

5.  Letters of support (from students, faculty colleagues, administrators, alumni, etc.)

6.  Sample syllabi of courses taught

7.  Samples of teaching materials developed

8.  Examples of innovative methods of teaching

9.  Examples of scholarly and service materials relevant to student learning and excellence in teaching

10. Examples or indications of the broader importance of material taught, such as relevance to society at large, lifelong learning, critical thinking, and so forth.

It is understood that inclusion of all of these materials may not be possible.  Overall, the nominee is encouraged to bear in mind that the committee is seeking to learn as much as possible about the nominee.  To this end, the recommendation is to submit a package of materials that provides a clear, coherent, informative picture of who he/she is as a teacher.
