¾ GPA of B or better

(See chart at bottom of page)

**GPA is calculated using CORE 40 requirements
+Unconditional admission shall mean students who are allowed to take at least 12 credit hours at PUC.
Rationale
The increase in requirements for unconditional admission for traditional students to Purdue University Calumet are recommended for the following reasons.
¾ To improve the quality of students attending Purdue University Calumet. It is expected that more qualified students will apply to PUC if they believe the criteria indicate a challenging education.
¾ To raise the level of Purdue University Calumet to a Tier III on the U.S. News and World Report. The recommended SAT/Equivalent ACT score and GPA for the 2010-2011 academic year fall within the scores of most Tier III schools.
¾ To increase the graduation rate at PUC. It is expected more qualified students will be able to complete a college degree within 6 years.
¾ To increase retention. It is expected that more qualified students will remain at PUC and not drop out.
¾ To increase the student population. It is expected, based on the reports from other schools which raised standards, that by increasing admission critiera, more students will be interested in attending PUC.
While it is expected that the change in admissions criteria may cause a downturn in the number of students applying to PUC in the short term, it is expected that in the long term, the number of students will increase and surpass the present number. However, to maintain or increase student enrollment and billable hours during the phase-in of more rigorous criteria for admission, additional strategies need to be employed. The Committee on Selectivity and Admission Criteria make the following recommendations.
Recruitment and Program Initiatives
1. Develop new programs for working adults.
2. Support different delivery systems/methods for instruction including general education courses to facilitate completion of online degree programs.
3. Recruit additional numbers of international students for undergraduate and graduate programs.
4. Explore ability to establish reciprocity agreements with counties in northeastern Illinois and southwestern Michigan.
5. Establish agreements and contracts for 2 plus 2 baccalaureate degree programs with junior colleges in northeastern Illinois and southwestern Michigan.
6. Develop market strategies to increase enrollment of students with military credit.
7. Increase the number of unrestricted scholarships.
8. Enhance alumni-based recruitment and retention initiatives.
Student Services
1. Use existing housing effectively – give preference to students meeting requirements for unconditional admission and who register for at least 12 hours each semester.
2. Begin building next housing complex.
3. Explore possibility of increasing limit on % of students in housing units from 10% to 20%.
4. Build housing units designed specifically for students with families.
5. Expand Day Care Center hours to cover evening courses.
Other
1. Strengthen collaboration with area high schools to increase the number of students who meet minimum unconditional admission standards in terms of courses completed, GPA, and SAT scores.
2. Conduct study to examine the impact of alternative tuition structure on billable hours, such as the one used by West Lafayette.
3. Simplify the application process for the Graduate School.
4. Improve funding for faculty salaries to improve ability to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty.
5. Increase the number of paid internships within northwest Indiana and Chicago area as well as in southwest Michigan.
