Senate Document 04-01
                                                                                                 For Discussion

To:  The Faculty Senate

From:  Academic Integrity Task Force

Re:  Recommendation

Date:  8/19/04

Given the fact that the nation is facing a growing problem of cheating, as illustrated in such studies as David Callahan’s The Cheating Culture (New York: Harcourt, Inc., 2004);

Given the fact that the strategic plan of the campus seeks significantly to improve the quality of the campus climate; and

Given the importance of expanding the campus commitment to integrity,

The Committee on Integrity recommends the adoption by the Faculty Senate of a Campus-Wide honor system which includes the following features:

1.  An Honor Code and an Honor Pledge to which all Purdue University Calumet Students must adhere: “I understand that academic dishonesty will not be tolerated at Purdue University Calumet.  I am here to learn.  Through learning, I will strive to become a better person and a more valuable contributor to society.  I understand that dishonesty in the classroom, through cheating, plagiarism or other dishonest acts, defeats this purpose and disgraces the mission and quality of a Purdue University Calumet education.  Therefore, I make the following pledge:  ‘In accordance with the honor code, I will not engage in dishonesty in my academic activities, and I will not tolerate such dishonesty by other students.’”  The Honor pledge will appear on student application forms and other official documents of the University, in classrooms, and elsewhere.

2.  The establishment of an Honor Council and clear procedures for dealing with infractions of the Honor Code.

3.  Development of a handbook to describe procedures, obligations, rights, and responsibilities of students, faculty, and staff relating to maintaining the Honor Code.

4.  Creation of a standing subcommittee on student academic integrity under the Student Affairs Committee.  Membership of the subcommittee should include four faculty members, two students, the Vice Chancellor for Student Services or his designee, and at least one member of the Honor Council.  The Committee on Student Academic Integrity shall be responsible for developing and monitoring, with the cooperation of appropriate University offices and officers, policies and procedures relating to implementation of the student Honor Code, developing a handbook, seeking necessary support and resources for the Code, and regularly reporting to the Student Affairs Committee and the Faculty Senate about the Honor Code and its implementation at Purdue Calumet.
