Re: Recommendation on Academic Reorganization in The Schools of Management and Technology

Date: March 30, 2005

Proposal

The Faculty Senate's role is Advisory in all proposed changes to the academic organization of Purdue University Calumet. However, the Senate has a working document on Creation of New Departments that recognizes that Faculty must be involved from the beginning in any process to form new academic units. Thus, the Faculty Affairs Committee of the Senate has been involved in the deliberations related to the current proposal by the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs to reorganize departments in the School of Management and a Department in the School of Technology.

The Committee recommends the Senate endorse this effort to change the academic organization.

Rationale

Attached to this document are three proposals that are part of one package for reorganization. The first part is the Reorganization of Four Departments in the School of Management, the second is the Change in Composition of Disciplines and Faculty in the New Management Department of Information Systems (that combines the MIS program in School of Management and the CIS part of the CISIT Department in the School of Technology), and the third part is the Reformation of the CISIT Department into the CIT Department. Faculty Affairs has reviewed this package and supports this endeavor to strengthen the academic organization in general and allow faculty development in new emerging fields.

Implementation

Once endorsed by the Senate, the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs will move forward to implement this change. Official implementation will become effective at the beginning of the fiscal year 2005-06. It is expected that ongoing discussions concerning scheduling of classes and curriculum issues will continue to move forward.
