Re: Terminology regarding those in the role of students

Date: April 28, 2005

RESOLVED:

The Senate encourages administration, staff and faculty to refer to students as

‘students’ when they are in that role, rather than as clients, customers, or stakeholders.

Rationale:

1. In the interest of clear communication regarding those who attend the University to learn and who assume the role of students in relation to the faculty teaching them.

2. Student incivility at universities across the country, including at Purdue University Calumet, has surged. According to recent research, one of the factors contributing toward “student incivility” is that although their role of student is unchanged, they are often referred as customers, clients, or stakeholders.
