Re:  Tenure Procedures for Joint appointments

Date: November 16, 2004

RESOLVED: The following amendments shall be made to Senate Document 00-04, Revised from the Original Document, approved 18 January, 2003, for Tenure Procedures at Purdue University Calumet, to be effective Fall Semester, 2005.

I.        Under section V. Committees, A. Primary Tenure Committee, the following third subsection should be added.

3. Joint appointments in departments either in two different schools or in the same school

The primary tenure committee shall consist of at least five tenured faculty: two voting members from each of the two departments in which the joint appointment is held, the remaining member(s) determined jointly by the heads of the two departments to which the untenured, tenure-track faculty member has been appointed and in consultation with the untenured, tenure-track faculty member.

This committee will be co-chaired by the Head(s) of the Departments in which the joint appointment is held,  both of whom will serve ex officio, without vote. If either of the co-chairs is not tenured, he or she shall not serve on the committee, and the appropriate department or school shall choose a tenured faculty member to replace this individual as co-chair without vote. The procedure for selecting voting members of the primary tenure committee shall be determined by the faculty of each department or school if there are no departments. Members may come from outside a department or school if there are insufficient members within the department or school.

II.     Under B, The Secondary Tenure Committee, the following amendments should be made.

§         The first paragraph should be numbered 1 and subtitled Secondary Tenure Committee for appointments in a single department.

§         A second and third paragraph should be inserted. They should be numbered 2 and 3 respectively, and subtitled “Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments in departments within the same school” and “Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments involving departments in two different schools,” respectively. The following texts should then be inserted in the respective paragraphs as follows.

2. The Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments within the same school

The Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments within the same school  shall follow the same procedures as for appointments within a single department.

3.   Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments involving departments in two different schools

The Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments involving departments in two different schools shall consist of five voting members, all tenured faculty, representing the two schools involved in the joint appointment. There shall be two voting members from each of these  schools, with at least one member from each of the two departments in which the faculty member has a joint appointment. The Deans of the two schools in which the joint appointment is held shall co-chair the Joint Schools Secondary Tenure Committee without vote. The procedure for selecting other members of the committee shall be determined by the faculty of the schools involved in these joint appointments respectively.

III.   Under section VI Procedures, A. Primary Tenure Committee, the following 3rd subsection should be added.

3. Joint appointments in two departments either in two different schools or in the same school.

The written evaluation shall be forwarded to the department heads and the dean(s) of the two departments in which the joint appointment is held. The department heads of each of these two department also shall forward a separate recommendation to the dean(s), except in those cases in which one or both of the department heads is untenured. Only written evaluations of tenured department heads shall go forward.

IV.  Under B, Secondary Tenure Committee, the following amendments should be made.

Rationale

Changes to this document provide for joint appointments within and between schools. The major changes relate to the make-up of the primary and secondary committees. The intent of the Faculty Affairs Committee in making these changes is (1) to provide for representation of each of the departments/schools in which the joint appointment is made and (2) to provide the candidate with the opportunity to weight the vote of one department/school over another if s/he so chooses by allowing one of the departments/schools to have more representation than the other.

Minor changes have been made (1) to provide for co-chairs rather than a chair and (2) to pluralize the Heads and Deans involved in joint appointments.
