Re:     Site license of “Turnitin” for student integrity

Student Affairs Committee voted for purchasing a site license of “Turnitin” on December 8, and requests a Senate approval for the following recommendation.

RECOMMENDATION:

Given the Faculty Senate’s commitment to academic integrity, the Student Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate strongly recommends the purchase of a site license to “turnitin.com,” a product designed to detect plagiarism, thereby permitting all faculty at Purdue University Calumet to assess student assignments through this product.  As a part of the acquisition of a site license, faculty and staff will be provided with instruction on the use of “turnitin.com” to evaluate student assignments. 

JUSTIFICATION:

1. The availability of this product will help to assure student integrity at this Campus by providing faculty and staff with a means of detecting plagiarism.
2. This product will be available at all campuses within the Purdue University system.  A local site license would be a logical opportunity for Purdue University Calumet and the extension of the system-wide commitment to this Campus.

3. The annual cost of the product is relatively modest for this Campus, in relation to the advantage for faculty and staff of having this product available.
