Re: Promotion Procedures for Joint appointments

Date: November 16, 2004

RESOLVED: The following amendments shall be made to Senate Document 01-09R, Promotion Procedures at Purdue University Calumet (approved 01/15/03), to be effective Fall Semester, 2005.

  1. Under Committees, paragraph 1, sentence 2 two inserts “ between the School of Education and the Departments with Secondary Education Programs,” and “ of the two departments in which the joint appointment has been made based on the representation and participation determined by the Procedures for Tenure (Document 04-0X). These shall be” should be made so that the paragraph reads as follows: In cases of joint appointments between the School of Education and the Departments with Secondary Education Programs, administrative Heads of each appointing academic unit shall provide for proportionate representation and participation of the two departments in which the joint appointment has been made based on the representation and participation determined by the Procedures for Tenure (Document 04-0X). These shall be congruent with the following provisions for single appointments.

  1. Under Committees, Paragraph 2 the following text should be inserted after sentence 3.

In the case of joint appointments between the School of Education and the Departments with Secondary Education Programs, the Heads of the candidate’s two academic departments shall co-chair the committee without vote except in the following circumstances: one or both of the Heads are untenured, one or both of the Heads are serving (with or without vote) on both the area committee and the University Committee on Promotions or one of the Heads is the candidate. In this case the Head(s) who falls into either of these circumstances shall not be a member(s) of the primary committee, the committee shall elect one or both the co-chair{s) from among its voting members and that chair(s) shall be allowed to vote.

  1. Under Committees, paragraph 4, the following text should be inserted after sentence 2. In the case of joint appointments, the area committee shall be configured in the same way as the area committee is configured for Tenure, based on the representation and participation determined by the Procedures for Tenure (Document 04-0X).

  1. Under Procedure, the following text should be added at the end of paragraph 1.

In the case of joint appointments, the evaluation will be forwarded to the Deans of the two schools involved with the joint appointment, along with a separate evaluation by the Department Head of each of the two Departments in which the joint appointment is housed. The committee co-chairs will meet with the candidate as soon as possible after the vote of the primary committee to inform the candidate of the recommendations of both the Heads or co-chairs and the committee.

V. Procedure. Paragraphs 2 and 3. The words Head and Dean should be made plural and chair should be revised to read co-chairs .

Rationale :

Changes to this document provide for joint appointments between the School of Education and Departments with Secondary Education Programs. The changes to the make-up of the committees and the committee chairs are based on the representation and participation determined by the Procedures for Tenure (Document 04-0X) but configured according to the criteria for Promotion committee members.

Other changes are pro forma, (1) pluralizing the number of Deans, Heads who will be involved, (2) indicating committees will be co-chaired by the academic departments to which the applicant is involved.
