Senate Document 04-08 Faculty Affairs Committee For Discussion To: Purdue University Calumet Senate From: Faculty Affairs Committee Re: Tenure Procedures for Joint appointments Date: November 16, 2004 RESOLVED: The following amendments shall be made to Senate Document 00-04, Revised from the Original Document, approved 18 January, 2003, for Tenure Procedures at Purdue University Calumet, to be effective Fall Semester, 2005.
3. School of Education and Departments with Secondary Teaching Programs The primary tenure committee shall consist of at least five tenured faculty: two voting members from each of the two departments in which the joint appointment is held, the remaining member(s) determined jointly by the heads of the two departments to which the untenured, tenure-track faculty member has been appointed and in consultation with the untenured, tenure-track faculty member. This committee will be co-chaired by the Head of the Department offering the secondary teaching program and the Head of the Department of Teacher Preparation of the School of Education, both of whom will serve ex officio, without vote. If either of the co-chairs is not tenured, he or she shall not serve on the committee, and the appropriate department or school shall choose a tenured faculty member to replace this individual as co-chair without vote. The procedure for selecting voting members of the primary tenure committee shall be determined by the faculty of each department or school. Members may come from outside a department or school if there are insufficient members within the department or school.
"The Secondary Tenure Committee for Joint Appointments between the School of Education and Departments with Secondary Teaching Programs shall consist of six voting members, all tenured faculty, representing the three schools involved in joint appointments between the School of Education and the Schools in which the Departments of Secondary Teaching Programs are housed, including the School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, and the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. There shall be two voting members from each of these three schools, with at least one of these members coming from each of the two departments in which the faculty member has a joint appointment. The Dean of the School of Education and the Dean of the School with the Secondary Education program in which the joint appointment is held shall co-chair the Joint Schools Secondary Tenure Committee without vote. The procedure for selecting other members of the committee shall be determined by the faculty of the three schools involved in these joint appointments respectively."
The written evaluation shall be forwarded to the department heads and the deans of the two departments in which the joint appointment is held. The department heads of each of these two departments also shall forward a separate recommendation to the deans, except in those cases in which one or both of the department heads is untenured. Only written evaluations of tenured department heads shall go forward.
Rationale Changes to this document provide for joint appointments between the School of Education and Departments with Secondary Education Programs. The major changes relate to the make-up of the primary and secondary committees. Minor changes have been made (1) to provide for co-chairs rather than a chair and (2) to pluralize the Heads and Deans involved in joint appointments. |
