Re: Release Time for Senate Chair
Date: March 23, 2004
RESOLVED:
The Chair of the Faculty Senate will receive a maximum of a .25 release time per semester (when requested) to be funded cooperatively between the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs, and the faculty member’s School Dean and Department Head.
Rationale :
Faculty Senate Chair is required to spend an enormous amount of time attending to Senate matters. This includes (but is not limited to):
Preparing for Senate meetings, convocations and town hall meetings
Attending Senate meetings
Attending Agenda Committee meetings
Preparing Agenda with Secretary of the Senate
Attending bi-monthly Board of Trustee meetings
Presenting at two Board of Trustee meetings each academic year
Meeting with the Chancellor monthly
Meeting with VCAA monthly
Representing PUC Faculty at state meetings, i.e. ICHE
Additional time working with members of Senate and Committee Chairs (approximately 5 hours per week)
Additional time working with Deans and Department Heads on issues
Responding to all faculty requests
Representing the faculty at all university functions
Leading the three campus governance groups in campus-wide matters
West Lafayette provides release time for Senate Chair
In accordance with the Constitution, the Faculty Senate is part of the governance of the university and therefore needs to be chaired by someone with sufficient time to carry out its functions.
The Faculty Senate works in collaboration with the University Administration. This collaboration should include funding for travel and release time to do the job adequately.
It is difficult to find someone willing to chair the Senate because of lack of time to do so and the reduced emphasis or recognition of the importance or duty of Service.
The Faculty Senate should be chaired by someone who is a senior faculty member, not by someone seeking to use the position to demonstrate service to the university.
Implementation :
Once passed by the University Senate this shall become effective with the 2005/2006 Academic Year.
