Re: Acceptable Terminology Regarding Students

Date: March 29, 2005

RESOLVED:

Students shall be referred to as “students” at all times, in all places and by all persons on and off campus, while enrolled at Purdue University Calumet. They are not clients, not customers, nor stakeholders.

Rationale :

Student incivility at universities across the country, including at Purdue University Calumet, has surged. According to recent research, one of the factors contributing toward “student incivility” is that their role has been changed by university administrations from that of students to that of customer, client, or stakeholder. This is a disservice to the purity of the educational process.

Implementation :

This shall be effective when approved by the University Senate.
