PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD RECIPIENTS

I. Purpose of the Outstanding Teacher Awards

The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding teaching performance by the faculty at Purdue University Calumet (as defined in Article II of Purdue University Calumet's Articles of Organization).

An outstanding teacher is one who demonstrates superior ability in helping the students meet course objectives, stimulates their desire to master course objectives, and who exhibits competence in his/her discipline. The teacher will also recognize that his/her teaching responsibility to students does not stop at the class room door and, therefore, will be ready to aid and motivate them in a counseling and advisory capacity, either formally or informally.

II. Overview of the Selection Process

The following steps outline the selection process. Each step is described in greater detail in subsequent sections.

A. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall solicit nominations in November of each year from students, alumni, faculty and administrators.

B. The University shall publicize the list of nominees for the purpose of requesting input from students, colleagues, and alumni.

C. The nominator and nominee shall be responsible for a nomination package that provides sufficient evidence of the candidate's abilities. The nomination package shall be submitted to the Dean of the appropriate school by March 1st.

D. Each school shall establish a faculty committee to evaluate nominees from their school. The nomination packages of no more than three nominees from each school shall be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

E. A university committee, comprised of faculty members and students, shall make the selections of the award winners from the finalists submitted by the schools.

F. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall announce the names of the finalists and make the presentation of the awards at an announced faculty convocation.


III. Procedure for Making Nominations

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall begin soliciting nominations for the awards from the University community in November of each year. Nominations for the award may be made by students, alumni, colleagues, or by faculty members themselves, subject only to the restrictions listed in Section IV. The nominator shall be responsible for submitting the nomination package to the Dean of the appropriate school by March 1st. The nomination package shall be forwarded to the chair of the school committee. The University shall publish the list of nominees in order to solicit additional support for the nominees from the University community.

IV. Outstanding Teacher Awards Eligibility Requirements

A. The nominees must have had a teaching FTE of at least 0.50 at Purdue University Calumet for each semester of the academic year prior to nomination.

B. The teaching FTE for the year in which the person is nominated must equal at least 0.50 each semester.

C. The nominee must be willing to have his/her name placed in nomination.

D. The nominee must not have won a University Outstanding Teacher Award during the four years preceding the nomination. Nominators should feel free to resubmit previous nominations.

V. Nomination Package

The nomination package shall consist of a brief of not more than two pages prepared for each nominee with appropriate appendices attached.

A. Structure of the Two-Page Brief

1. Name of the nominee, rank and departmental affiliation

2. List of all courses taught during the academic year prior to nomination with dates and numbers of students enrolled; i.e., MA 153 - SP 89, 150 enrolled.

3. Statement of nominator indicating why the nominee warrants the award.

4. Information relevant to the instructional effectiveness of the nominee.

5. When nominating a previous winner who has again become re-eligible, the nominator should focus on growth in effectiveness beyond that for which the award has already been given.

B. Appendices

It is recommended that the following material from three years, including the fall semester of the current academic year, be appended to the brief:

1. Results of all student evaluations of instructional effectiveness for all classes taught during this period. Evaluation materials from a maximum of three years may be submitted. Any material submitted in this category MUST include the written statement of the nominee that evaluations were conducted without his/her presence or influence.

2. Not more than four documents of support from at least two of the following:

a. outside evaluators

b. students and/or alumni

c. faculty

d. administrators

VI. Composition and Function of the School Committee

A. Composition

1. Prior to submission of nominations, the Dean shall appoint a school committee comprised of at least five faculty members. The members of this committee shall be ineligible for Outstanding Teacher Awards and shall not be members of the University Committee. (see Section VII)

2. The Committee shall be chaired by the Dean (or designee) without vote.

B. Function

1. The committee shall evaluate the nominees and select a maximum of three finalists. The ratings of the finalists shall not be forwarded to the University Committee.

2. The method of evaluation and voting shall be determined by the schools.

3. The Dean shall forward the nomination packages of the finalists to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

4. Committee evaluation of nominees and selection of finalists shall be kept confidential.

VII. Composition and Function of the University Committee

A. Composition

1. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall appoint a University Committee comprised of four faculty members who are ineligible for Outstanding Teacher Awards and four students.

2. The committee shall be chaired by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (or designee) without vote.






B. Function

1. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall establish an initial meeting date for this committee and inform the school committees of deadlines.

2. The committee shall evaluate and rank the finalists.

3. The awards shall be based on monetary value with the award carrying the greatest monetary value given to the finalist with the highest ranking. At least one award will be made to a faculty member from each degree granting school of the University.

4. The committee shall draft a short statement indicating the area(s) of outstanding teaching for which each recipient is selected.

5. The names of award winners and the basis for the selection of each shall be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

6. Committee evaluations of finalists shall be kept confidential.


VIII. Presentation of Awards

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall announce the names of the finalists and make the presentation of the awards at an announced faculty convocation.

IX. Implementation

This procedure for selecting recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Awards shall go into effect for the 1993-94 academic year.

 

 

Proposed Permanent Procedure


PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF THE OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD RECIPIENT

I. Purpose of the Outstanding Teacher Award

An outstanding teacher is one who demonstrates superior ability in helping the students meet course objectives, stimulates their desire to master course objectives, and who exhibits competence in his/her discipline. The teacher will also recognize that his/her teaching responsibility to students does not stop at the class room door and, therefore, will be ready to aid and motivate them in a counseling and advisory capacity, either formally or informally.


II. Overview of the Selection Process

The following steps outline the selection process. Each step is described in greater detail in subsequent sections.

D. The University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee shall publicize the list of nominees for the purpose of requesting input from students, colleagues, and alumni.
E. The University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee shall make the selection of the award winner and notify the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

F. The Chancellor shall present the award at an announced faculty convocation.



III. Procedure for Making Nominations

1. Results of all student evaluations of instructional effectiveness for all classes taught during this period. Evaluation materials from a maximum of three years may be submitted. Any material submitted in this category MUST include the written statement of the nominee that evaluations were conducted without his/her presence or influence.

2. Not more than four documents of support from at least two of the following:

a. outside evaluators

b. students and/or alumni

c. faculty

VI. Composition and Function of the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee

1. The Dean of each of the four schools, with input from the school’s faculty, shall nominate one representative to the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee. The representative shall be ineligible for the Outstanding Teacher Award as long as she or he is a member of the committee. The school’s representative will serve a two-year term and may be re-appointed.
2. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (or designee) shall be a member without vote.

B. Function

1. The Chair of the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee shall establish an initial meeting date for this committee.
2. The Committee shall accept nomination packets from nominators and evaluate the eligibility of each nominee. The Committee shall announce the names of eligible nominees in order to solicit additional support for the nominees from the University Community.
3. The committee shall evaluate the nominees.
4. The committee shall draft a short statement indicating the area(s) of outstanding teaching for which the recipient is selected.

5. The name of the award winner and the basis for the selection shall be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
6. Committee evaluations of nominees shall be kept confidential.
7. The committee shall choose the representative that will serve as the committee’s chair for the following academic year and will notify the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of its choice.


C. Initial organization of the Committee

1. The Dean of each of the four schools, with input from the school’s faculty, shall nominate one representative to the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee. By November 1st the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall be notified of each school’s representative. The representative shall be ineligible for the Outstanding Teacher Award as long as she or he is a member of the committee.
2. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall appoint one of the representatives to serve as the committee’s chair.
3. The representative nominated from each of the following two schools shall initially serve a one-year term: the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Technology. The representative nominated from each of the following two schools shall initially serve a two-year term: the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences and the School of Professional Programs.
4. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (or designee) shall be a member without vote.

VII. Presentation of Award

The Chancellor shall make the presentation of the award at an announced faculty convocation.

VIII. Implementation

This procedure for selecting recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award shall go into effect for the 1999-2000 academic year.
