SUBJECT: Revision of Athletic Affairs Committee Charge and Composition.

REFERENCE: Council of Faculty Delegates, Council Document 82-7.

  1. Background

The Board of Trustees has granted to the faculty the authority to establish policies for participation by PUC in intercollegiate athletics and to establish policies for student participation in athletics (Constitution IV. B. 7 & 8). Under the previous Council, the Athletic Control Committee (Council Document 70-42), amended to the Athletic Affairs Committee (Council Document 82-7), was established under the aegis of the Student Affairs Committee. This committee has been retained in the transition to the Purdue University Calumet Senate.

B. Summary

After broad consultation and circulation of a summary consultative draft, the Student Affairs committee proposes streamlining the committee to nine members, all with vote: three participants (at least two of whom must be students and the third may be a fitness center member), three administrators, and three faculty. The chair of the committee will be selected from among the three faculty members. The charge of the committee is expanded to include fitness and wellness activities. The committee continues to report to the Student Affairs Committee of the Purdue University Calumet Senate.

  1. Proposal
  1. Name
  2. The name of the committee shall be the Wellness, Fitness and Sports Committee

  3. Membership
  4. Nine members, each with vote.

    --Three participants chosen from among intramural, intercollegiate and fitness program, at least two of whom must be students.

    --PUC Athletic Director

    --PUC Director of Wellness and Fitness

    --PUC Director of Fiscal Operations and Comptroller

    --Three faculty members, one of whom will be elected chair.

  5. Nomination, Appointment and Tenure
  6. The Senate Nominating Committee shall initially nominate three faculty members to three, two and one year terms.

    The Athletic Director and Student Government President shall annually present a slate of nominees from among intramural, intercollegiate and fitness program participants to the Vice Chancellor for Student Services. The Vice Chancellor for Student Services, in consultation with the chair of the Wellness, Fitness and Sports Committee, shall nominate three athletes at least two of whom must be students.

  7. Chairperson
  8. The Chairperson shall be elected in April or May of each year. This Chairperson shall be selected by and from among the three faculty members recommended by the Purdue University Calumet Senate Nominating Committee.

  9. Area of Responsibility

The committee shall have the following duties and responsibilities relating to student and community programs:

    1. To promote high standards in intercollegiate athletics,
    2. To study, review, and approve all changes in rules or regulations affecting the conduct of intercollegiate athletics, wellness, fitness, and intramural sports programs,
    3. To approve all schedules of athletic events,
    4. To study, review and approve policies and procedures for wellness and fitness programs and activities,
    5. To serve as an advisory and consultative body to the Purdue University Calumet Senate and the Chancellor on matters of policy and budget affecting intercollegiate athletics, wellness, fitness, and intramural sports programs.
  1. Written Reports

Following each meeting, the secretary of the committee shall forward minutes to the Chairperson of the Student Affairs Committee, the Secretary of the Purdue University Calumet Senate, the Student Government Association.

The Wellness, Fitness and Sports Committee shall also submit an annual report of its activities to the Student Affairs Committee.
