Appendix B to Council Document 93-4 PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR AWARD RECIPIENTS I. Purpose of the Outstanding Scholar Awards The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding scholarly and/or creative endeavors by faculty members at Purdue University Calumet (as defined in Article II of Purdue University Calumet's Article of Organization). An outstanding scholar is one who demonstrates superior achievement in creative endeavor or in the development of new knowledge in his/her discipline or in scholarly or creative work that demonstrably affects students. II. Overview of the Selection Process The following steps outline the selection process. Each step is described in greater detail in subsequent sections. A. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall solicit nominations in November of each year from alumni, faculty, outside evaluators/clients, and administrators. B. The University shall publicize the list of nominees for the purpose of requesting input from students, colleagues, and alumni. C. The nominator and nominee shall be responsible for a nomination package that provides sufficient evidence of the candidate's accomplishments. The nomination package shall be submitted to the Dean of the appropriate school by March 1st. D. Each school shall establish a faculty committee to evaluate nominees from their school. The nomination packages of no more than three nominees from each school shall be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. E. A university committee, comprised of faculty members and students, shall make the selections of the award winners from the finalists submitted by the schools. F. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall announce the names of the finalists and make the presentation of the awards at an announced faculty convocation. III. Procedure for Making Nominations The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall begin soliciting nominations for the awards from the University community in November of each year. Nominations for the award may be made by students, alumni, colleagues, or by faculty members themselves, subject only to the restrictions listed in Section IV. The nominator shall be responsible for submitting the nomination package to the Dean of the appropriate school by March 1st. The nomination package shall be forwarded to the chair of the school committee. The University shall publish the list of nominees in order to solicit additional support for the nominees from the University community. IV. Outstanding Scholar Awards Eligibility Requirements A. The nominees must have had FTE of at least 0.50 of teaching and/or other academic related activities at Purdue University Calumet for each semester of the academic year prior to nomination. Related academic activities include advising, program coordination, curriculum development, and course coordination. B. The FTE for the year in which the person is nominated must equal at least 0.50 of teaching and/or other academic related activities each semester. Related academic activities include advising, program coordination, curriculum development, and course coordination. C. The nominee must be willing to have his/her name placed in nomination. D. The nominee must not have won a University Outstanding Scholar Award during the four years preceding the nomination. Nominators should feel free to resubmit previous nominations. V. Nomination Package The nomination package shall consist of a brief of not more than two pages prepared for each nominee with appropriate appendices attached. A. Structure of the Two-Page Brief 1. Name of the nominee, rank and departmental affiliation 2. Statement of nominator indicating why the nominee warrants the award. 3. Information relevant to the impact and significance of the scholarly activities of the nominee. 4. When nominating a previous winner who has again become eligible, the nominator should focus on growth beyond that for which the award has already been given. B. Appendices It is recommended that the following materials from three years, including the fall semester of the current academic year, be appended to the brief: 1. Not more than four documents of support from among the following: a. outside evaluators/clients b. alumni c. faculty d. administrators 2. It is recommended that materials similar to the following be appended to the brief. a. Refereed articles accepted for publication in journals. b. Refereed papers and/or presentations at professional or instructional conferences. c. Grants and funded research. d. Books which contribute to the literature and body of knowledge in the discipline. e. Serving as editor of a journal. f. Edited books. g. Serving as editorial consultant or as a referee for submissions/abstracts for publication. h. Serving on an editorial advisory board or an editorial board. i. Invited lectures and workshops and conferences at other institutions. j. Publications in proceedings of conference presentations k. Published reviews of books, scholarly works and textbooks, especially if such reviews are published in journals. l. Software published, patented, or sold to clients. m. Patents and copyrights. n. Invited chapters written for books. o. Non-refereed articles in publications related to the faculty member's area of professional or teaching expertise and invited articles for publication in trade magazines. p. Involvement in graduate and undergraduate student research with the goal of publishing that research. q. Paid and non-paid consulting experiences that are relevant to the faculty member's area of professional expertise. r. Awards for scholarly achievement. s. Other relevant examples of creative and/or scholarly activity. VI. Composition and Function of the School Committee A. Composition 1. Prior to submission of nominations, the Dean shall appoint a school committee comprised of at least five faculty members. The members of this committee shall be ineligible for Outstanding Scholar Awards and shall not be members of the University Committee. (see Section VII) 2. The Committee shall be chaired by the Dean (or designee) without vote. B. Function 1. The committee shall evaluate the nominees and select a maximum of three finalists. The ratings of the finalists shall not be forwarded to the University Committee. 2. The method of evaluation and voting shall be determined by the schools. 3. The Dean shall forward the nomination packages of the finalists to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. 4. Committee evaluation of nominees and selection of finalists shall be kept confidential. VII. Composition and Function of the University Committee A. Composition 1. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall appoint a University Committee comprised of four faculty members who are ineligible for Outstanding Scholar Awards and four students. 2. The committee shall be chaired by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (or designee) without vote. B. Function 1. The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall establish an initial meeting date for this committee and inform the school committees of deadlines. 2. The committee shall evaluate and rank the finalists. 3. The awards shall be assigned based on recognition of the finalist with the highest ranking. At least one award will be made to a faculty member from each degree granting school of the University. 4. The committee shall draft a short statement indicating the area(s) of outstanding scholarly activities for which each recipient is selected. 5. The names of award winners and the basis for the selection of each shall be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. 6. Committee evaluations of finalists shall be kept confidential. VIII. Presentation of Awards The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall announce the names of the finalists and make the presentation of the awards at an announced faculty convocation. IX. Implementation This procedure for selecting recipients of the Outstanding Scholar Awards shall go into effect for the 1993-94 academic year. |
