Change in course description and prerequisite: CIS 241 Web Development I

Justification:

The current description is outdated and specifies several aging technologies that are less significant now than when the course was initially offered. Recent efforts to position this course for accreditation purposes have removed the need for CIS 252 and CIS 166 as prerequisites. Including the freshman experience course as a prerequisite ensures students have knowledge of University resources needed to be successful in the course.

Current:

CIS 241 Web Development

Prerequisites:

CIS 252 Systems Analysis and Design

CIS 166 Introduction to C++ I

Description:

This course is an in-depth study on the internet and World Wide Web. Topics include intra- and extra-net concepts, security issues, design criteria and other Web aspects. Focus is on teaching skills necessary to develop applications for use on the Internet. Students learn how to write HTML, BVScript, and JavaScript code, how to use Microsoft FrontPage and other tools to create Web pages, and how to use image maps, forms and scripts, frames animated GIG files tables, and style sheets. Students will complete a semester project working as a member of a team.

Proposed:

CIS 241 Web Development

Prerequisites:

CIS 103 Survey of IS and IT or consent of the Instructor

Description:

This course is an in-depth study of the Internet and World Wide Web. The course covers technical issues, content development, design criteria and other related aspects that will allow students to develop the skills necessary to create individual pages and cohesive Web sites. Students will utilize a markup language to code Web documents, create style sheets to format content, and be introduced to client-side scripting. Various application tools will also be employed to create Web content.

Impact on Students:

Students must take freshman experience before taking this course. Students can take CIS 241 earlier in their program. Students who have taken freshman experience in other degree options can enroll in CIS 241. The errors in the course description in the course catalog will be removed. The course description better reflects the current content of the course.
