Document Subject: New Course OLS 340 – Fundamentals of Construction Safety

Justification: Within business and industry, construction has one of the highest injury and fatality rates trailing only mining and agriculture. Students pursuing a degree in OLS or Construction Management and Engineering Technologies need to have an understanding of the hazards and regulations associated with this occupational category. Students will be exposed to current safety and health issues facing the construction industry and an in-depth exposure to the OSHA regulations most likely to affect the employers in the industry.

Proposed: OLS 340– Fundamentals of Construction Safety

Class 3, cr. 3. Prerequisites – none

This course is structured to provide students with an overview of construction safety and health regulations. Throughout the course students will participate in discussions pertaining to construction safety issues and will be provided information to evaluate the primary OSHA-targeted hazards in this industry. Students will learn to recognize key hazards, be exposed to control technologies and corrective actions for the prevention if injury and illness that commonly occur at construction sites.

Impact on Students: Students will be exposed to safety and health issues in a critical industry and to the safety regulations most commonly associated with activities in the construction industry. Provides additional breath in the Major.

Impact on Other Academic Departments: Provides students in Construction Technology an opportunity to broaden their understanding of how safety regulations can impact their current/future employer.
