Document Subject: New Course OLS 560, “Women in Management” for the OLS program

Justification: Recognizing the extent of women supervisors and human resource professionals in the U.S. workforce, the METS Advisory Board and OLS faculty recommend that the OLS program needs an advance undergraduate/graduate level diversity course in diversity management to supplement its existing undergraduate diversity courses, OLS 454 “Gender and Diversity in Management” and OLS 550 “Managing Diversity”.

Current: None

Proposed: OLS 560, “Women in Management”

Class 3, cr. 3

Prerequisite OLS 454

This course is an advanced undergraduate or entry level graduate course designed to provide students with the comprehensive study of contemporary leadership and workplace issues facing women as supervisors and human resource professionals. Issues relevant to women as supervisors and human resource professionals are discussed at a level where students will be able to develop policies and practices to assist organizations to avoid problems and litigation. Theories regarding the management of a diverse workforce and other diversity issues relevant to women supervisors and human resource professionals will be discussed and analyzed to enable students to apply their knowledge to present and future workplace situations and in a way that is consistent with organizational strategic objectives.

Impact on Students: Students will receive advanced information on diversity related concerns and managing a diverse workforce. Updating the capstone sequence of OLS courses will allow the Purdue University Calumet OLS program to remain compatible with programs in the rest of the system.
