Document Subject:

Nursing Major: Change in Credit Hours, Change in Prerequisites, Change in Course Name, Change in course Description.

Justification:

In the old curriculum there were two community health practica. This was a left over from the old

curriculum where Family Nurse Practitioners were educated at the undergraduate level.

This is no longer true and there is no longer a need to include a practicum solely for the

child (pediatric) content. This is not any longer needed at the undergraduate level because it

happens at the graduate level. This is consistent with our benchmarking with other programs.

Current:

NUR 487 Community Health Practicum I

Course Pattern: 0 lec hrs. 6 lab hrs. 2 cr. hrs.

Prerequisites: NUR 396, NUR 398

Description: This is one of two community practica which emphasizes integration of

professional nursing roles and community health concepts. The nursing process is utilized

as a systematic approach to foster adaptation to stimuli within a dynamic environment.

Therapeutic interventions emphasizing preventative strategies are applied to young adult

through elder populations in unstructured settings,

Proposed:

NUR 485 Community Health Practicum

Course Pattern: 1 lec hrs. 6 lab hrs. 3cr. hrs.

Prerequisites: NUR 285 and NUR 393(except for RN/BS Completion and Accelerated BS/MS students); NUR 397

Pre/corequisites: NUR 486

Description: The community health practicum emphasizes integration of professional nursing

roles and community health concepts. The nursing process is utilized as a systematic approach

to foster adaptation to stimuli within a dynamic environment. Evidence based interventions

that emphasize preventative strategies are applied to persons across the life span in

unstructured settings.
