Justification:

This course is proposed in order to strengthen student’s theoretical understanding of nursing

as a discipline, profession and science. Lack of this content was identified as a weakness in

the curriculum. In order to integrate the content this course replaces two 1 hour seminars, Ethos III and

Ethos IV

NUR 381: Ethos III

Course Pattern: 1 lec. hr. 0 lab hrs. 1 cr. hr.

Description: In Ethos III, the contextual and philosophical elements of nursing as both a scientific

and humanistic discipline are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between contextual

and philosophical views and professional nursing practice. Evolution of a personal philosophy and

vision of the profession is fostered.

NUR 191: Ethos IV

Course Pattern: 1 lec hr. 0 lab hrs. 1 cr. hr.

Prerequisites: NUR 381

Corequisites: NUR 498

Description: In this final seminar, concepts explored previously in the series are synthesized,

culminating in the articulation by students of a personal philosophy of nursing. Methodologies which

foster analysis and critical thinking, encourage the dialectic and promote self-evaluation are utilized.

Proposed:

NUR 320: Conceptual and Theoretical Thinking in Nursing

Course Pattern: 3 lec hrs. 0 lab hrs. 3 cr. hrs.

Prerequisites: NUR 181

Corequisite: Nur 197

Description: This course examines the concepts that form the philosophical and

theoretical basis of nursing science. The content is leveled to provide undergraduate

students a foundational understanding of nursing as a discipline and profession,

the nursing metaparadigm, fundamental patterns of knowing, borrowed theories,

nursing theories, critique and evaluation of theories. Special emphasis will be placed on

the relationship between nursing philosophy, knowledge, research and practice.
