Revision of the Business Economics Major

Justification: |
Students selecting this major have a broad range of career objectives and these proposed changes offer greater flexibility for the major by providing options of courses required for the major. Furthermore, the list of elective courses in the major has been expanded to reflect current course offering and listings.

Key Features: |
Where a specific course was required for the major, a student has a choice between two options. MGMT 305 and ECON 353 which are currently required courses in the major would now be elective courses.

Current: Students majoring in Business Economics will complete six major courses, which will include: MGMT 305 Business Statistics
Three additional courses will be chosen from the following: ECON 352 Intermediate Macroeconomics ECON 360 Econometrics ECON 419 Managerial Economics ECON 465 Business and Economic Forecasting ECON 490 Topics in Economics

Proposed: Students majoring in Business Economics will complete six major courses. One course will be chosen from each of the following three foundation course areas: Microeconomics Foundation Courses ECON 351 Intermediate Microeconomics
Macroeconomics Foundation Courses
ECON 380 Money and Banking
Quantitative Methods Foundation Courses ECON 360 Econometrics ECON 465 Economic Forecasting Techniques
Three additional courses will be chosen from the following: ECON 311 Environmental Economics ECON 322 Public Finance and Taxation ECON 351 Intermediate Microeconomics ECON 352 Intermediate Macroeconomics ECON 353 Business Cycles ECON 360 Econometrics

This change will provide greater flexibility in scheduling as well as in focus in the courses selected for the major.

Economics is offered by Management. No new courses are part of this proposal. Courses will continue to be offered and rotated as they have been. Other than expanded opportunities for elective courses in economics, there are no foreseeable impacts on other units.

Because of the variety of upper level courses now offered to meet the demands of the management curricula for electives, this change is possible without additional course offerings or other university resources. |
