Document Subject:

The document proposes a new course in the early childhood program of the behavioral sciences department: Internship in Early Childhood Settings

Justification:

There are a number of students in a variety of programs who are not interested in classroom

teaching who might wish to extend their understanding of young children. This course will provide those students with a practical experience that builds on knowledge of early childhood development, but does not entail the entire set of prerequisites required for traditional practicum courses.

Current:

      None

Proposed:

BHS 3XX Internship in Early Childhood Settings  3-0-3. A guided practical experience for students interested in young children. Students will spend 5 hours per week in any of a variety of settings serving children from ages 0 – 8. Under the guidance of the setting professional and the university supervisor, the student will decide on a topic for development, culminating in a student paper describing and documenting the experience.

Prerequisites: Psy 361, BHS 216, BHS 217, BHS 224.

Note: This course must be taken in conjunction

with one of the guided electives associated

with the ECD minor. This course does not

count for practicum credit.

Impact on Students:

Undergraduate Students from a variety of fields outside of teaching will have the opportunity to

investigate issues and to work with very young children, expanding their knowledge base.
