Document Subject: New Course: BHS 235 CDA Portfolio and Experience
Justification: CDA (Child Development Associate) is a nationally recognized basic credential for early
childhood professionals. It has become the minimum standard for hiring in many child care facilities in
Indiana, and in many other states. The content requirements for CDA are met through beginning
courses in the ECD program at Purdue Calumet, however many students need assistance with preparing
the extensive required portfolio. In addition, all candidates for this credential need access to someone
who can observe and evaluate their work with children. The proposed class provides both portfolio and
observation components.
Current: The course has been offered several times as a BHS 290
Proposed: BHS 235
Class 3, Lab 0, Credit 3
Semesters S,1,2
Prerequisite BHS 216. Students must be regularly involved in an early care and education
program. Students will prepare autobiographical and goal statements, assemble resources
and participate in discussion of issues in early care and education programs specifically
geared to supporting the CDA process.
