Subject: Title Change in Course FM 101, Step Aerobics
Justification: The Exercise Physiologists in our Nutrition, Fitness and Health degree program suggest that the title of this course no longer reflects current practices and it should be changed to update it and expand it.
Current: FM 101, Step Aerobics
Lab 2, Credit 1. Repeatable.
This course will provide students with a working knowledge of healthy living practices, an assessment of the students' present fitness status, and an opportunity to choose a physical activity, as well as develop additional wellness strategies that can be enjoyed throughout life.
Proposed: FM 101, Cardiovascular Exercise Machines
Lab 2, Credit 1. Repeatable.
This course will provide students with a working knowledge of healthy living practices, an assessment of the students' present fitness status, and an opportunity to choose a physical activity, as well as develop additional wellness strategies that can be enjoyed throughout life.
Impact on Students: The title change will allow course expansion, which will offer
students the opportunity to operate independently on a number of different exercise
machines, while focusing on cardiovascular efforts. Originally, the course was an
instructor directed step-exercise format that was limiting in its effectiveness and difficult
in its timing. Currently the course uses a step exercise video format, which is also
somewhat limiting. The proposed title change would allow the Exercise Physiologist
specialists to work individually with students on a variety of cardiovascular machines,
thus better meeting student needs.
Impact on Other Academic Units: None.
Impact on University Resources: None. Laboratory resources are in place already.
Impact on General Education: Offering these courses allows the University to
continue to help academic units fulfill the General Education Requirement to facilitate
wellness for students.
