“BUILDING
COMMUNITY THROUGH THE ARTS” ADVISORY COMMITTEE
For the last four (4) semesters, the Chancellor’s office has spearheaded a program entitled “Building Community Through the Arts.” This Purdue University Calumet initiative has resonated with diverse external communities as evidenced by audiences ranging from three hundred to five hundred people. Faculty and staff interest, involvement and leadership in these programs has been a tremendous benefit to the campus.
Consequently, I am establishing the “Building Community Through the Arts” Advisory Committee to oversee the continuation of this initiative. Initially, the Executive Assistant to the Chancellor will provide support to the advisory group’s programs.
The Advisory Committee members will be appointed by the Chancellor. Membership will consist of five individuals representing diverse areas from across the campus community.
As
a regional university it is extremely important that we are engaged with our
community in a variety of ways.
Artistic expression is a universal attribute of human beings. By providing innovative, comprehensive and
excellent programs, we facilitate growth as a university within this
community. Since the initial
motivation for this idea stemmed from a recognition that diverse cultures,
though traditionally unheralded, have important perspectives for all of us, it
is vital to maintain that framework.
Current plans include a Hungarian Celebration on November 16, 2003 and a Chinese Celebration January 31, 2004. In addition to the Black History and Cinco de Mayo events planned and implemented by other departments, this Committee will be responsible for at least one celebration on a periodic basis each year.
Thank
you for your continued enthusiasm for this very important community outreach
project.
Howard Cohen
