Department Heads Meeting

Monday, August 5, 2002

Minutes

I.  Call to Order.  Chancellor Cohen called the meeting to order recognizing staff that were representing their department heads in their absence.  He reviewed the agenda items.

II.  Strategic Plan Survey.  J. Allen Johnson introduced this agenda item stating that the Senior Leadership Team wanted to know if the Strategic Plan process has taken hold and how thoroughly it is understood within departments.  This project is being addressed by Roy Hamilton, J. Allen Johnson, Beth Pellicciotti, and Colleen Robison who have developed the Strategic Plan Survey strategy recommendation.  Colleen presented the goals of the survey, the communication plan, and the intention of using the on-line survey tool in September.  The department heads’ role is to encourage a high percentage of participation and response of faculty and staff to the survey.  Survey results will be analyzed and reported to the Senior Leadership Team and this group.  In response to a question, the only students who will participate are student employees.

III.  Possible Topic for Administrative Skills Building.  Vice Chancellor Sandra Singer introduced this topic.  In order to identify areas of leadership development and for this group to get a sense of where we need to begin, a survey was distributed to identify and prioritize the importance of major skills for attendees.  Following review of the surveys and feedback, high priority skills will be presented as workshops.  It is our intention to use a portion of these monthly meetings to work on skills building.

* In an effort to devote the remainder of this meeting for the next agenda item Chancellor Cohen requested Announcements and Comments, Q&A, be addressed at this time.  J. Allen Johnson thanked those who participated and assisted in the success of Purdue Day at Navy Pier in Chicago.  J. Allen announced the visit of Senator Evan Bayh tomorrow, Tuesday, August 6, 9:30 a.m., SFLC 100.  Senator Bayh will address corporate accountability in a student forum.  The forum is not limited to students; everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring a student.
