Instrument: College Student Report

Administered by NSSE Director George Kuh at Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research and Planning

Survey design team chaired by Peter Ewell (National Center for Higher Education Management Systems)

Given to students at four-year public and private colleges/universities

Many questions derived from other student questionnaires

    CSEQ College Student Experiences Questionnaire

CIRP Cooperative Institutional Research Program Freshman Survey

 Objectives…

Obtain annual, nationwide data about student participation in programs/activities provided for learning and personal development

Estimate how undergraduates spend their time, what they gain, how they actually use resources for learning that school provides

Capture sampling of students at two points in their academic careers: first year  and senior year (also, must be on campus at least two terms)

National Benchmarks…
Effective Institutional Practices:

    Level of Academic Challenge

    Active and Collaborative Learning

    Student-Faculty Interaction

    Enriching Educational Experiences

    Supportive Campus Environment

Brief History…
Administered via traditional paper questionnaire or World Wide Web

Conceived in 1998 nationally to gather information about collegiate quality

    1999 Pilot Project: 75 institutions

     2000 Survey: 276 participants

     2001 Survey: 321 four-year participants

 Usefulness…

Identify how to improve the undergraduate experience

      Foster comparative studies

      Discover patterns of student-faculty interactions

Public accountability: prospective students, parents, college counselors, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders (accrediting agencies)

Link student’s responses with own institutional data base for further study

Compare results among peer institutions to identify best practices

 The Report…

Mean summary report comparing responses to similar colleges and national database

Frequency distributions summarizing number/percentage of first-year and senior students’ responses

Comparative data for similar colleges (Carnegie Classification, Master’s I)

NSSE SPSS data file of students’ responses for further analysis

 The Categories…

Student behavior: how students spend time inside and outside of class

Institutional requirements—curriculum and faculty: how much reading and writing have you done; have you worked with faculty on a research project

Student reactions to college—students’ perceptions about quality of their own experiences; self-reported gains in skills as a result of attending college

How factors affect student learning and development
