I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nabil A. Ibrahim as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2003.  Dr. Ibrahim will also join the Department of Engineering as Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Ibrahim is presently serving as Associate Vice President of Graduate Studies and Research at San Jose State University.  Dr. Ibrahim received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cairo, Cairo, Egypt, and was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, in 1974.  He has served as a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Manitoba, Canada; Director of the Materials Research Laboratory at Bradley University; Chair and Professor of Engineering at Bradley University; Dean of the College of Engineering at San Jose State University; and Chief Research Officer at San Jose State University.

Dr. Ibrahim brings extensive experience in developing academic programs, growing external funding for research, creating corporate partnerships, and building graduate enrollments.  He is the author of 24 publications and holds two patents.  Dr. Ibrahim has a strong commitment to student success and to regional economic development.

I wish to thank Dr. Michael Gealt for his services as Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs since January 2003.  He has provided excellent leadership in Academic Affairs, particularly in the implementation of the campus strategic plan. We are extremely fortunate to have someone of his caliber to guide us through this transition in leadership.

I also wish to thank the members of the Selection Advisory Committee for their assistance in screening and interviewing candidates, and for their advice and counsel.  Finally, I extend my appreciation to all faculty and staff who participated in the selection process.
