Chancellor's Memorandum

No. A-236

August 16, 2000

REVISED SMOKE FREE CAMPUS POLICY

[Supersedes Chancellor's Memorandum No. A-200, dated July 15, 1992]

Chancellor's Memorandum No. A-200 limited smoking to the exterior of campus buildings. In recent years, concern has been expressed about the amount of smoke in building doorways that affected those entering and leaving campus buildings. There has also been concern expressed about smoke entering the buildings from its concentration around building doorways. The campus Wellness Council was asked to review the situation and to make recommendations. Their report has been received and reviewed by myself and other members of the Purdue University Calumet community.

Effective immediately, smoking will be limited to sites at least 50 feet from any campus building doorway. Smoking will be permitted in designated campus areas adjacent to campus buildings and elsewhere remote from campus buildings. The designated smoking areas will be identified by appropriate signage. A map of designated smoking areas will be distributed shortly.
