PURDUE UNIVERSITY CALUMET
CHANCELLOR'S MEETING WITH DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS
Minutes of October 2, 2000
I. Call to Order. Chancellor Yackel called the meeting to order.
II. Chancellor's Report. Chancellor Yackel said fall brings the Lake Area United Way campaign. He said Professor C. Chancey and B. Synos are co-chairs for Purdue University Calumet's participation in it. Professor Chancey said Purdue University Calumet's goal is $22,000 of a total of $6M. He said Ms. Synos met with service staff. He asked department heads to send him the dates of their next department meeting so that he can speak to the faculty. He said every Purdue University Calumet employee will receive a pledge card, and more information about the campaign.
Chancellor Yackel said Purdue University Calumet has been assigned to a North Central Association Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) colloquium. He said he received messages from other members of the colloquium which includes Rose-Hulman, the University of Central Oklahoma, Northwest Technical College of Minnesota, and Illinois Valley Community College. He said the members of the colloquium have wide-ranging interests and are non-competitive. He said Purdue University Calumet will do a self-assessment soon, and the colloquium will help the university learn what others have done.
Chancellor Yackel said the legislative request continues to move forward. He said the university highlighted its capital request when President Jischke saw for himself the necessity for new science laboratories. He said the request includes quality improvement funds of $1.6M each year of the biennium. He said quality improvement is focused on economic development. He said he will provide information about the request to the department heads for their use.
Chancellor Yackel thanked all for their participation in President Jischke's visit and the Gala. He said those assembled will have the opportunity later in the meeting to critique the visit, and noted there was enthusiasm for President Jischke's message. He said the Times printed a story from the office of University Relations on Sunday about the development of the recently acquired four hundred acres in south Lake County. He said the story may have been distributed to coincide with President Jischke's visit and message, as the development focuses on technology, an innovation/incubator center, and shared academic facilities with Indiana University and IVY TECH.
III. Library Information Resources and Services. K. Carpenter distributed copies of a prototype of a handout to be distributed to the faculty, and made a presentation on new strategies, services and resources available for the library. Professor Carpenter described in some detail the library's mission, new strategies proposed by the 2000 Task Force on Collection Development and Information Policy, and new services and resources available on line and through the Purdue University Calumet library website. Professor Carpenter said next steps include increased communication with academic and other units, increasingly efficient assessment, upgrading of FirstSearch to make it more user friendly, and the implementation of on-line JSTOR science and other subscriptions.
IV. Wausau Insurance Overview. M. Rincon introduced John Weber of Wausau Insurance. Mr. Weber offered the company's apologies for past inconveniences. He reviewed the source of past problems, and presented information about Wausau's plans to them. He said he will make several presentations on campus today and tomorrow about changes that will take place.
V. Projects Update. G. Sullivan said the move into Anderson is scheduled from October 20 through November 8 and should be completed prior to scheduling students for Spring 2001. He said departments to be moved include Construction Technology, METS, Management, and some of Engineering. He said the Scheduling Office will report to Academic Affairs and will move to CLO. He said other present projects include an assessment of the underground utilities in the area of the proposed Gyte science tower, completion of the SFLC canopy, and the opening of the Challenger Conference Center by the end of the week.
VI. Announcements/Q&A. Chancellor Yackel asked for comments on President Jischke's visit to the campus. He said his message seems to be positive, including there not being a "cookie cutter" approach to the four campuses. In the discussion that followed, there was discussion of the value of the use of the term system as it applies both externally and internally, of preparing a response to the community college system, on the need to know what it is Purdue University Calumet should be and what it should not be in terms of its programs and its relationship to the community. It was noted that President Jischke is fact and number oriented. The president's emphasis on undergraduate learning backed by appropriate research was noted, as was his emphasis on engagement with the community. Chancellor Yackel said President Jischke's review of the delegation of authority from the State of Indiana to the Board of Trustees to various university units, and the president's comments on the proper use of the power given to these units suggests that the president may suggest alternates to the present authority structures if power is not exercised responsibly.
D. Sharp reported on several changes in CTIS including the upgrading of two servers, the move of T. Gunia to CTIS to work with development and administration of website issues, and a partnership review of Banner 4.3 by the Enrollment Services Center, CTIS, and Business Affairs with a view to an early implementation of it.
Vice Chancellor Singer said Professor C. Murphy has agreed to chair the LASS Dean Search Committee and that the other members of the committee will be named soon.
R. Riddering reminded those present of the Career Fair scheduled for Friday, October 6, in the PER building.
