CHANCELLOR'S MEETING WITH DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS
Minutes of November 6, 2000
I. Call to Order. Chancellor Yackel called the meeting to order.
II. Chancellor's Report. Chancellor Yackel said the previous week's conference in Puerto Rico was highly successful. He commended Professor Jorge Roman-Lagunas for his excellent leadership of the conference
Chancellor Yackel said that C. Robison and L. Durham, both of whom are involved in a records management initiative, will report at the December, 2000 meeting on future moves.
Chancellor Yackel said a major reorganization of development, communications and WBAA was announced from President Jischke's office. He said, and Vice Chancellor Edwards agreed, that a major development effort to raise $2 B is planned. Vice Chancellor Edwards said PUC outsourced its alumni phonathon to PUWL, and $60K most of which is directed to academic units. He said reports will be forthcoming.
III. EAP Program (M. Rincon) Tri City Mental Health (M. Szyjan, A. Erb) M. B. Rincon introduced M. Szyjan and A. Erb of Tri City Community Mental Health Center. She said Tri City is Purdue University Calumet's designated Employee Assistance Plan provider. Mr. Szyjan provided statistics on substance abuse in Indiana, and in response to a question from Chancellor Yackel, said rates of abuse vary widely as by age, gender, and profession. Ms. Erb spoke about signs and symptoms of substance abuse, and noted that behavioral changes are likely to occur prior to physical signs of addiction. Mr. Syzjan reviewed the range of services available through Tri City and Ms. Erb told those present how to access the services. M. B. Rincon summarized the presentation, and urged those present to continue to be aware of human resource issues, and to ask for help from the Office of Human Resources if needed. Chancellor Yackel said those present have an obligation to make referrals, and encouraged those present to work with the Office of Human Resources as needed or when in doubt.
IV. Projects Update. R. Moyer said moves into Anderson are being completed, with backfill moves to CLO in planning. He urged those present, as did Chancellor Yackel, to visit Anderson: and noted its success as a retrofitted building. He said the contractors should finish the SFLC canopy this week, and that last week's hazardous material pick up was successful. He said he will report on winter projects at the December meeting of Deans, Directors, and Department Heads.
V. Announcements/Q&A. Professor Chancey said the Lake Area United Way Campaign will end in one week. He said the campaign lags $1500 behind the goal; but that the amount pledged exceeds the previous year.
M. B. Rincon reminded those present that the Beneflex enrollment period ends November 17.
G. Smokvina said applications for the Chancellor position are arriving quickly, and the committee is considering the use of a search firm. Dean Smokvina said National League of Nursing affirmed the accreditation of the associate degree program in nursing for an additional eight years.
P. Kienzle introduced Amy Josleyn, Assistant Manager of the Center.
Chancellor Yackel said there will be a formal announcement of D. Bartko as Coordinator of Institutional Evaluation and that she will review the recently completed Alumni Survey at the December meeting of Deans, Directors and Department Heads.
In response to a question from E. Andrews and a comment from M. B. Rincon on enrollment and costs, Chancellor Yackel said he sees no evidence of any one item causing the drop in Purdue University Calumet's fall 2000 enrollment relative to fall 1999. He cited the economy, and said no student ever complained to him about the technology fee. He said the university will target a pool of 2000 quality students who discontinued their studies in the past two years. Dean Smokvina mentioned of recent program at Purdue University West Lafayette on recruiting for graduate programs. She said the program emphasized the need to following up on inquiries in a planned, systematic manner. J. Wermuth said credit hours are more important to the fiscal health of the university than head count.
J. Friend reminded those present of Salute 2000 to be held Thursday, November 9 at the Radisson Star Theater. He said tickets are $10 and are available at the satellite bursar office, through Ticketmaster, and at the door.
