Minutes of May 1, 2000
I. Call to Order. Chancellor Yackel called the meeting to order.
II. Chancellor's Report. Chancellor Yackel said that the 2000-2001 budget is coming together. He said the legislative request for the 2001 Indiana General Assembly is being prepared. He reviewed the process for the legislative request. He said the guidelines from the Indiana Commission include 1) linking quality improvement to in-state economic development with a focus on high technology, 2) presenting evidence Purdue University Calumet is making wise use of state and student funds as defined both subjectively and objectively by the Commission and, 3) limiting quality improvement increments to no more than 2% of the institution's base budget. He said that item two is best addressed from outside sources and external reports.
Chancellor Yackel asked A. Severa to address the May 21 commencement. Ms. Severa said there are 700 eligible candidates. She said that 400 caps and gowns have been ordered to date. Chancellor Yackel said there will be a reception at 4:00 p.m. on May 21, 2000 in honor of Jerry Ross, honorary degree recipient. He said the reception will be held in the Challenger Learning Center.
Vice Chancellor Bryant said IBM designated Purdue University Calumet's Enrollment Services Center as a Best Practices in Student Services operations. He said the award is the result of a university effort, and that all are to be congratulated.
J. Friend said the Wellness Council will recommend that Purdue University Calumet be designated a smoke-free campus. Chancellor Yackel reviewed the history of the campus buildings becoming smoke free. He said the issue will be discussed with other advisory groups on campus for their comments.
Vice Chancellor Singer said Dr. Michael Gealt will be the next Dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science, effective August 1, 2000. She noted his success in assembling multidisciplinary groups that received a variety of grants from outside sources.
III. Construction Update. G. Sullivan reviewed the progress of construction projects in Anderson, Potter, Powers, Gyte, the Student Faculty Library Center, Lawshe, the Physical Education Recreation Center, the Riley Child Center, and the Conference Challenger Center. He said engineering and construction labs will return to Anderson in December 2000 at the earliest; that several labs in Potter are targeted for update through the summer; Gyte 158 lecture room will be connected to ISCP lab with tables, PCs and AV capability; and, improvements are scheduled to Gyte 102 and 107 including AV capabilities. He said the university is supporting an addition of a "Chemistry Tower" to Gyte in its capital request to the General Assembly in 2001. He said the estimated cost is $15M. He said the Conference Challenger Center is moving along at a rapid pace with the Challenger Center about 95% complete and ready to receive the new equipment. He said operations in the Conference Center are scheduled to begin October 1, 2000. He said the building will include a water feature on its east side, and that two additions are being planned for the building. He said one addition adds another Challenger complex, and the other adds four to five rooms to the Conference complex. Chancellor Yackel said that, contrary to the pictures shown at the Service Recognition Luncheon the previous Friday, the asbestos is gone from Anderson rather than just abated. Facelifts and lighting are scheduled for PER and refurbishing of the interior of the Riley Child Care Center.
