PURDUE UNIVERSITY CALUMET

CHANCELLOR'S MEETING WITH DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS

Minutes of March 6, 2000

I. Call to Order. Chancellor Yackel called the meeting to order.

II. Chancellor's Report. Chancellor Yackel said that Purdue is preparing its legislative request for the 2001 General Assembly session. He said the request will focus on technology, and economic development. He said the request will have to have a TQM component and will resemble a grant proposal. He said outcomes and partnerships will be stressed. He said Purdue will include a $15M request for a science lab addition to GYTE. He said there will be little new funding beyond that as the Commission for Higher Education intends to ask to add 1-2% to base budgets for new programs. He said the legislative request process includes approval by the Board of Trustees in July, the Commission in September, the State Budget Committee in late fall, and the General Assembly in January.

Chancellor Yackel said reviewed the timetable for preparation of the 2000-2001 budget. He said the Board of Trustees will meet on April 7 to approve promotions, student fees, and general budget outlines. He said the President will issue merit increase and inflationary budget guidelines on April 10, and that budget sheets will be available on April 12. He said that May 15, 2000 is the last day to process a Form 19E, Notice of Non-Renewal of Contract. He said that salary improvement will likely be restricted to 3% and fees to 4%. He said the latter figure seems to exceed legislative intent.

Chancellor Yackel said the Challenger Conference Center is moving forward very well. T. Soeka introduced Peggy Kienzle, a Purdue University Calumet alumna who will manage the Cnference Center. M. Denkhoff introduced James Garrett, Purdue University Calumet's new Bursar. B. Chancellor Yackel introduced Jerold Davis, soon to join the university as Coordinator of Institutional Evaluation.

Vice Chancellor Singer said that an offer has been made for a person to head the School of Education; that two finalists for the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science will revisit the campus; and that the last candidate for the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will visit campus March 8 and 9. She thanked those who met the candidates, attended their presentations, and provided feedback to the search committees.

Chancellor Yackel said the search for the next Purdue president is still on target to have the new president in place on July 1, 2000.

Vice Chancellor Singer distributed copy of the Purdue University Calumet Wellness Center and General Education Health Matters booklet. She said a copy was mailed to every Purdue University Calumet student. She said the magazine has a role in helping to meet Purdue University Calumet's obligation of providing a general education wellness component. She said the next step will be a campus-wide Student-Staff Wellness Fair on Tuesday, April 11. Both she and Chancellor Yackel urged those present to pass on student comments and wellness tips.

III. PUC/PWL Teaching Assistant Development Issues. D. Dunn reviewed the history of and the funding for this project. He said Lilly Retention Project funds are providing support for four Purdue University doctoral students to participate in the GRAD 490 mentoring course. He said that, in addition to participating in the courses, each student will be assigned, as a "shadow," to one of the following departments: Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics; Communication and Creative Arts; English and Philosophy; and Behavioral Sciences. He spoke to the value of the experience to the students, Purdue University Calumet, and the system-wide Graduate School. He said the next stage will be to add visiting professorships.

IV. Announcements/QandA. M. Rincon thanked those who participated in recent discussion groups on performance evaluations. She said the Service Recognition Luncheon will be held April 28. She asked those present to provide J. Taborski of Human Resources with the names of those who will have retired from university service in the period from July 1, 1999 through June 30, 2000.

M. Rincon said that Wausau Insurance representatives will be on campus Tuesday through Thursday March 21 through March 23 with the goal of getting health insurance matters straightened out on the spot. She asked those to be prepared if they need to avail themselves of this service.

D. Korchek said that three departments: Information Systems and Computer Programming, Manufacturing Engineering Technologies and Supervision, and Construction Technology, will jointly begin to offer in Fall 2000 a degree program in Computer Graphics Technology. He said the Department of English and Philosophy will join the partnership at a later date.
