CHANCELLOR'S MEETING WITH DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS
MINUTES OF February 7, 2000
I. Call to Order. Chancellor Yackel called the meeting to order.
II. Chancellor's Report. Chancellor Yackel said the presidential search continues and is on track. He said there will be budget meetings in West Lafayette later in the week. He said the Indiana General Assembly will be completing its business soon. He asked those present to continue to participate in the searches, especially those of dean and department head. He said the Challenger Conference Center is on schedule, and that plans are being developed for an opening concurrent with the May Commencement Exercises.
Chancellor Yackel said there have been several new hires, including a Bursar, a Director of Career Development and Placement, and a Coordinator of Institutional Evaluation.
III. Student Services Assessment Plan Vice Chancellor Bryant and Assistant Vice Chancellor Didelot presented information on Student Services's Comprehensive Assessment of Student Services plan. Vice Chancellor Bryant spoke about the general principles supporting the plan; and the revised Student Services Mission and Vision statement, noting that the last items needs yet to be fleshed out with goal, objectives and an action plan. He especially thanked Vice Chancellor Singer, Assistant Vice Chancellor Mistri, Professor D. Barbour and C. Robison for their assistance to Student Services in developing and implementing the plan.
Assistant Vice Chancellor M. Didelot said that Student Services identified best practices elsewhere as a benchmark against which to measure Student Services's efforts in assessment. She said Student Services accepted five criteria based on a joint recommendation provided by the American Association for Higher Education, the American College Personnel Association, and the National Association for Student Personnel Administration. She described the background and the results of a survey administered in Fall 1999 to 200 English 104 and 100 GNS 103 students, all of whom were classified 1. She said that students need help with prioritizing and balancing their lives. She said planning for future efforts will be based on a centralized collaborative push among Student Services units.
IV. Performance Appraisals. E. Wignall and M. Rincon spoke about Performance Appraisals at Purdue University Calumet. Mr. Wignall discussed the value of regular, effective employee appraisals to the university and to the employee. He said appraisals are to be completed by February 29, and said there are software products available for appraisals. M. Rincon reviewed some items that can result in an effective appraisal session, and encouraged those present to work with Human Resources if necessary.
V. Pay Policies. M. Rincon and T. Ryan presented information on overtime, overtime definitions, and flexible work schedules. Reference was made to more information available at the Human Resource link on Purdue University Calumet's website.
VI. Announcements/QandA.
M. Verduzco reviewed the Student Planner available at the bookstore, and asked those present to provide information about scheduled events through the Student Leadership and Development link on Purdue University Calumet's website.
Assistant Vice Chancellor Mistri said Lilly Retention funds will support 1 section of psychology and sociology in Fall 2000 as freshmen experience courses.
Vice Chancellor Edwards introduced Robert Skadberg, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Advancement.
Chartwells Catering Services Presentation. P. Brown and Stuart Henning, Chartwells District Manager, presented information on the process and results of a partnership to improve Chartwells' service to the campus community. Mr. Henning spoke to a proposed, time-lined action plan that will address issues of service, presentation, cost, product quality, and hours of operation. There followed a food presentation to those assembled.
