PURDUE UNIVERSITY CALUMET
CHANCELLOR'S MEETING WITH DEANS, DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS
Minutes of August 14, 2000
I. Call to Order. Chancellor Yackel called the meeting to order.
II. Chancellor's Report. Chancellor Yackel said Dr. Martin Jischke assumes the presidency of Purdue University today. Chancellor Yackel said he received a proposal from the Wellness Committee recommending the campus become smoke free. He said that, after review, it was agreed to have a fifty-foot no smoking zone around campus buildings. M. Kull said there will be boundary signage, and identified smoking areas.
Chancellor Yackel said he will establish an imaging study team soon. He said several campus units, including Enrollment Services and the Faculty Senate, asked for the technology. He said it was agreed centralization of the service is more cost effective. He said the team will be charged to determine the need for the technology, and to review the technology itself. He said the team will report to him by the end of the calendar year. He asked those present to provide him with input on the membership of the team. In response to a question from S. Lerner, he said rapidly changing, obsolescing technology provides a strong reason for centralization of imaging.
Chancellor Yackel said Fall 2000 enrollment seems healthy, with nearly 8000 students presently enrolled. He said the final phase of open registration presents the usual opportunities and recognized the level of effort the campus will be required to make during the final phase of open registration.
Chancellor Yackel said the Indiana Commission for Higher Education met Thursday and Friday of last week. He said the Commission approved Purdue University Calumet's MBA program being offered on the Purdue University North Central campus. He said the Commission is involved in Community College issues, and he believes that Purdue University Calumet's response, with Dan Dunn's participation, is correct. D. Dunn said one issue the regional committee of colleges and universities is considering is the centralization of student financial aid. He said Vincennes University's part of the Community College is lagging.
Chancellor Yackel said that Purdue University Calumet's decennial accreditation review by the North Central Association is scheduled for the 2002-2003 academic year. He said North Central is establishing an alternate accrediting process, the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP). He said Purdue University Calumet is pursuing participation in the project. Vice Chancellor Singer said the major difference between AQIP and the decennial model is AQIP requires sustained rather than periodic effort. She said Purdue University Calumet's early participation in the project will likely require more effort over the long run; but that the university will be able to define the quality issues it chooses to pursue and at the same time be among the institutions shaping the AQIP process. She described a putative timetable for accreditation through AQIP. She encouraged those present to visit www.aqip.org for up to date information. Chancellor Yackel noted two other benefits of AQIP. He said Purdue University Calumet will be identified and teamed with five or six other institutions which should allow the university to have more and better benchmarks. He said there are several quality initiatives on campus that can serve as models; including E2 = Q, the Enrollment Services Center, and Web Development. He said programmatic accreditors; e.g. TAC-ABET, are or soon will be requiring quality improvement as part of their accreditation. He said since this will happen, it seems the university will be better served by having only one accreditation philosophy.
Both Chancellor Yackel and Vice Chancellor Singer said they will return to those present for their input, especially in suggesting quality improvement projects. They asked for input, suggestions and cooperation from the campus community.
Vice Chancellor Singer introduced Dr. Michael Gealt, dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science. Dr. Gealt encouraged those present to work with the School collaboratively and cooperatively. He also encouraged those present to stop by the School office (Gyte 181) to meet him.
III. Projects Update. G. Sullivan reviewed campus projects building by building. He said the contractor should complete Anderson by mid September. He said Facilities Planning personnel will meet with stakeholders later today to discuss the move-in. He said renovations to labs in Potter will be completed by the beginning of classes. He said renovation of Gyte 158 is complete except for some furniture and projection screens. He said the SFLC dining room is undergoing some refurbishing including the addition of two windows to the exterior on the south side. He said the canopy project will not be complete by the beginning of classes, but the south doors will be open at the end of the present week with intermittent closures to complete the canopy project. He said the refurbishing of the Riley Child Center will be complete later this week. He said the Challenger Conference Center is complete except for minor punch list items and some interior decorating and finish work. He said the building should be operational by October 1. He said progress on the Gyte/Gyte Annex upgrade and addition will depend upon the Indiana General Assembly, which begins its next session in January 2001. Chancellor Yackel said the Indiana Commission for Higher Education accepted a capital request list of $417 million. He said Purdue University Calumet seems to be in good shape for its request.
IV. Announcements / Q & A. Vice Chancellor Leo Bryant said a team from Purdue University Calumet's Enrollment Service Center made a presentation at the recent annual meeting of IBM as part of receiving IBM Best Practices recognition. He said the team will make a presentation to the campus.
V. Adjournment. With no other business before the group, Chancellor Yackel adjourned the meeting.
